ICE and Rockies meet for hockey festival

By Bram Rossman

Ahead of this upcoming weekend’s BC Pond Hockey championships, hosted by Invermere’s Columbia Valley Rockies Junior B hockey team, a hockey festival was held in Invermere on Sunday, January 21.

The event featured a session at Invermere’s Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena by the Kootenay ICE, who suited up for a practice at the Rockies’ home rink.

Following their practice, ICE players hopped on the team bus and headed down to Lake Windermere for an outdoor meet and greet on the open ice.

Players sat down on picnic tables and laced up their skates, grabbed some sticks and went for a casual skate on the outdoor rink, set up just off Kinsmen Beach.

The public was encouraged to come watch and many local minor hockey players, including members of the Rockies, joined the ICE players on the outdoor rink. Before heading home, several ICE players headed out for a skate on the Lake Windermere Whiteway. Skating on the lake this year, due to the solid ice conditions, is said to be the best in years.
