Inter-Community Business License gets green light

By Nowell Berg

City of Kimberley and City of Cranbrook councils Oct. 24 unanimously approved the Inter-Community Business License (ICBL) agreement between the two cities.

The move, supported by the Kimberley & District Chamber of Commerce and Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, came about due to the high degree of integration between the two economies, resulting in the need to reduce red tape and costs for businesses operating in both cities.

The ICBL means a Kimberley company would not require a separate Cranbrook business license and vice versa.

As an add-on to the city’s regular business license fee, companies from Kimberley that operate in Cranbrook pay an additional $75 fee for an ICBL. It “allows mobile businesses to operate across participating municipalities. This includes, but is not limited to trades, plumbers, electricians, cleaning services, pest control and similar businesses,” said Kevin Wilson, City of Kimberley Economic Development Officer.

According to Wilson, 90 of the 530 Kimberley business licenses are from Cranbrook.

The goal of the ICBL is to enhance the regional economy through more commerce and competition between the two cities.
