Lightning sparks single blaze overnight

Last evening’s thunderstorm activity around Cranbrook and Kimberley produced one small lightning-strike fire – in the Limerick Creek area, close to the back end of the Perry Creek drainage, about 11 km west of Lumberton.

The .01-hectare fire is rated as active by the BC Wildfire Service. It is the only one listed for the East Kootenay.

Meanwhile, the now 90-ha Hobo Creek wildfire southwest of Parson remains active but 100% guarded, with 75 firefighters currently on scene, along with four helicopters and two pieces of heavy equipment.

The Columbia-Shuswap Regional District has issued an evacuation alert for the recreation sites at Mitten Lake, Bittern Lake, Nine Bay and McLean Lake. The fire is not directly impacting these sites however, it has potential to impact the Parson Forest Service Road used to access these sites.

The now-named Hog Ranch wildfire, 12 km northeast of the Hobo Creek fire and about 10 km northeast of Parson, remains active at about 38.4 ha.
