Lingering cold may slow secondary road plowing

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting reports its meteorological service is now anticipating temperatures to remain well below freezing until at least Friday morning (March 11).

“Our forecast for tonight and Thursday night shows low temps nearing -12C to -18C, depending on specific location, and highs of roughly -5C. Higher elevation, such as Elkford and Panorama, are expected to receive the lower temps in the range,” Mainroad stated in a weather advisory.

That means it may be more difficult to clear highways, the highways contractor added.

“The very cold temperatures, following after Monday-Tuesday’s snowfall, will be conducive to the formation of compact and ice conditions on roads.

“Mainroad crews were able to achieve bare and dry conditions on most numbered highways and arterial routes yesterday and last night, by plowing and application of crystal salt, liquid brine and other chlorides.

“However, lower-volume side roads and shaded/ high elevation areas, may still have compact conditions. The forecasted cold temperatures will inhibit the effectiveness of chlorides, so crews will be applying sand for traction on the compact. Drivers should pay attention to changing conditions and adjust driving habits to suit. Please give our road crews a safe distance to work.”

Mainroad’s 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on all your observations and concerns to our crews when contacted.
