Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. this afternoon reports this evening it anticipates a snowy weather system to impact the East Kootenay over the next 48 hours.

Mainroad’s meteorological service is predicting snowfall of varying intensity, depending on local area.

“A coastal system is expected to deliver high intensity precipitation across southern B.C. In the East Kootenay, we expect to be affected by snowfall throughout the service area. Our patrols have already reported some localized, intermittent snowfall. Precipitation rates are expected to increase overnight on New Year’s Eve, then dry out later on New Year’s Day,” Mainroad stated in a stakeholders’ update.

Western areas of the service area such as Yahk, Moyie, Kimberley and Panorama are expected to receive the most accumulation. Locations east of Morrissey are forecasted to be less affected, but still receive some snow.

Additionally, Kootenay Pass, is expected to receive heavy snowfall; while this is outside of Mainroad’s service area, this may affect some motorists’ travel plans.

“Motorists may have noticed our units proactively treating major routes with anti-icing chemicals ahead of the event arriving, and the white chalky lines on the road surface as a result. Our crews will continue applying anti-ice chemicals and/or winter abrasive, and performing snow removal operations where necessary,” Mainroad stated.

“We encourage motorists to plan ahead of time for a safe ride from their New Year’s Eve activities, or delay travel on New Year’s Day until conditions improve.”
