Mainroad warns of incoming snowfall

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting’s meteorological service is reporting that an Arctic front will be moving through the East Kootenay starting this Monday (Feb. 20).

“The scattered rain and snow showers that we have been experiencing over the last few days are expected to turn to snow on Monday, lasting until Tuesday night,” Mainroad noted in a weather advisory.

“Our forecast is showing total snowfall amounts of 20-30cm by Wednesday, especially at elevations above 1500m.”

Additionally, temperatures next week are forecasted to plunge, with expected lows dipping below -16C from Tuesday night onwards into the week.

“The very cold weather following the snowfall could lead to the formation of compact conditions, especially on side roads. Motorists should expect compact conditions for the foreseeable future, until ambient temperatures rise sufficiently for the appropriate use of de-icing chemicals,” Mainroad said.

“You will have noticed our equipment applying anti-icing chemicals, including liquid brine, to area highways and arterial roads over the last few days in anticipation of the incoming weather. We ask that you continue to leave plenty of space for our operators when you see our snow removal equipment servicing the roadways.

“Our crews will continue with plowing operations and applying anti-icing chemicals and abrasive materials to the area roadways until the roads are returned to a safe standard.

‘We recommend avoiding unnecessary travel until highways are clear; if you must go out, use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather.”

Please also check www.drivebc.ca for traffic cameras and road conditions before heading out.

Mainroad’s 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on your observations and concerns to its crews when contacted.
