Making positive things happen in the East Kootenay

Not all community members have the opportunity to create a vibrant life.

Many struggle to achieve a sustainable livelihood because they have vulnerabilities that place them at risk and face barriers at accessing opportunities and support. Recognizing this, the United Way focuses its efforts on individuals and groups in our community that are vulnerable to a variety of social and systemic barriers.

Priority populations in a community vary according to local circumstances, but often include people dealing with or at risk of poverty, abuse or stigmas related to race, country of origin, culture, disability, age or sexual orientation.

The United Way East Kootenay directs investments to the following focus areas: All That Kids Can Be, Poverty to Possibility and Healthy People, Strong Communities.

ALL THAT KIDS CAN BE programs received 2017 funding totalling $57,463. The funds help children and youth reach their potential by investing in their early years, middle years and youth programs.

FROM POVERTY TO POSSIBILITY programs received 2017 funding totalling $23,847, meeting basic human needs and helping to move people out of poverty.

HEALTHY PEOPLE, STRONG COMMUNITIES programs received 2017 funding totalling $68,295. The funds are for supporting personal well-being and strengthening support services.

Making positive things happen in the East Kootenay takes more than good intentions and the contributions of a few. It takes everyone doing what they can because everyone shares in the benefits of a happy, healthy, and safe community where no one is left behind.

Consider this. If every single working person in the East Kootenay invested just $0.15 per day with the United Way East Kootenay, we would raise over $1.3 million dollars each and every year to invest in programs and organizations that would make a meaningful and measurable difference in the lives of East Kootenay residents. It could be someone you know.
