MLA Davis on the road to recovery

Kootenay-Rockies MLA Pete Davis participated in the Kootenay Fun 5 run in Cranbrook on May 2 after suffering a major, near-fatal stroke this past December.

This was one of his first public physical events since his recovery, marking a significant personal milestone.

“Today was the Kootenay Fun 5 and we finished dead last. And you know what? I could not be prouder,” Davis said.

“Our time was 1:11, but for me this was never about winning the race. Four months ago, in January, I came home in a wheelchair after my stroke. Today, I crossed a five km finish line in May. That is something I honestly wasn’t sure would even be possible back then.

“This recovery journey has been humbling, frustrating, inspiring, and emotional all at the same time. I’m still not fully recovered, but every step forward matters and today felt like a huge milestone for me personally.

“Today wasn’t about where we finished. It was about getting back up, putting one foot in front of the other, and proving to myself that recovery is possible. What an amazing and fulfilling day.”

Davis was joined by fellow MLAs Peter Milobar (Kamloops Centre), a favourite for party leadership and Rosalyn Bird (Prince George–Valemount), whom he thanked for their support.

BC Conservative Party Caucus members show solidarity for their fellow member.

Trevor Halford, acting leader of the BC Conservative Party, stated on social media: “Yesterday in Cranbrook, MLA Pete Davis crossed the finish line of a five K — five months after a stroke nearly took his life. He had to relearn how to stand, how to walk, how to trust a leg he still can’t feel. He set a goal to do this anyway.

“Pete, you’ve inspired your colleagues, your constituents, and a lot of people watching who are fighting their own quiet battles. The Kootenays are lucky to have you. So is our caucus.”

The Kootenay Fun 5 is Cranbrook’s favourite way to welcome spring, an annual five km fun run that brings together families, friends, and neighbours for a morning filled with movement, laughter, and community spirit.
