Political correctness triumphs over the truth

Letter to the Editor

Merriam-Webster definition of ‘genocide’ –“The deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political or cultural group.”

How in anyone’s wildest imagination could the National Inquiry of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women come up with this conclusion?

There is no doubt that this situation is a national tragedy and we must find a way out, but to use shocking, exaggerated language does not help.

It seems trendy these days that anyone involved in this type of issue must try to use over the top type of language, as if this will seem they really did a good job and be more comforting to those involved.

The real problem is cultural and has its roots right on the reserves, but political correctness prevents this from being remotely looked at and thus totally handcuffs anything useful happening as a result.

When this inquiry was first formed, I predicted that political correctness would triumph over the truth, and this is exactly what happened.

I don’t pretend to know the answer to this or other serious issues involving our indigenous people, but a couple of things I do know, is that political correctness is hindering progress and throwing gazzellions more money at it won’t help.
