Rain warning for Elk Valley and snowfall warning for KNP

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the Elk Valley and snowfall warning for Kootenay National Park.

Heavy rain is expected for the Elk Valley Thursday, Oct 28 through midday Friday, Oct 29. The heaviest amount is expected near Fernie.

A frontal system pushing across B.C. will spread rain to Elk Valley Thursday morning. Rainfall rate will intensify through the evening over the whole region. Heaviest rain is expected to fall near Fernie Thursday night. Rain will taper off near noon Friday as the front exits the region.

Total rainfall amount: 30 to 50 mm except 50 to 70 mm near Fernie.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

The same system is expected to bring 10 to 20 centimetres of snow for Kootenay National Park (KNP) and Yoho National Park between today and Friday morning.

“Snow will begin this morning and persist through Friday morning. Heaviest snow can be expected late this afternoon and tonight. Lesser snowfall accumulations can be expected near Field as precipitation will fall as wet snow at the lower elevations,” Environment Canada reported.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.
