SD5 Board Notes

The following is a summary of School District No. 5 (SD5) Board of Trustees motions carried during the October 8 and November 12 meetings.

October 8

Motions Carried

Advocacy:

That the board approves the BAA Course Orientation & Mobility 12.

That the board approves a different format to the Annual School Fees Report to the board.

Policy:

That the revised Policy 2.1 Tobacco/Cannabis Free District be approved by the Board of Education, with changes noted.

That revised Policy 1.5 Terms of Reference – Finance/Operations/Personnel Committee be approved by the Board of Education, with changes noted today.

Finance/Operations/Personnel

Isabella Dicken Elementary School

That the board authorizes the Superintendent, Secretary Treasurer and the Human Resources Director to monitor the need of a new portable this year for Isabella Dicken Elementary School and purchase one if necessary.

That the board approves an extra Committee Meetings Day on August 31, 2020.

That the board hires an external consultant to conduct an in-depth review on the district’s bussing in the Elk Valley and South Country.

That the board looks into leasing a bus for Jaffray/South Country and hire a driver for the 2019/20 school year.

That the board engages Stantec to conduct the Building Assessment for our district at Mount Baker Secondary School.

General

Following our recent Superintendent Recruitment Process for the board’s dual authority model facilitated by Dr. Sloan and the appointment of Silke Yardley to a three year term contract agreement, it would be appropriate for the recommendations, as amended on October 3 and 4, to be implemented as district policy with existing policies as required.

Following the board’s recent building the First Team session facilitated by Dr. Sloan focusing on the board’s dual authority governance role on October 3 and 4, the recommendations are proposed for the board’s review and to be considered for approval following another First Team session with Dr. Sloan.

Following the First Team discussions regarding the board’s role relative to Policy advocacy/influence, an ad hoc committee consisting of Trustees Kitt and Ayling prepare a one-page draft of the ABCs of an Advocacy Plan that will support the District’s Strategy Plan for the First Team’s consideration.

November 12

Motions Carried

Advocacy:

That the board forms a working group to work with DPAC/PACs to increase their support and function.

That the board examines what climate action initiatives the school district is currently undertaking and whether or not a policy needs to be put in place.

Finance/Operations/Personnel

That the board has School District No. 5 management look into the feasibility of reopening the Grasmere School (pictured above).

General:

That the board donates to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Hamper program in the amount of $1,500 in Cranbrook and $1,050 in Fernie. This represents a donation of $150 on behalf of each of the School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) schools in lieu of a gift to the staff of each school.
