SD5 superintendent heads to retirement

Lynn Hauptman

Following the end of the school year this June, School District No. 5 (SD5), Southeast Kootenay Superintendent Lynn Hauptman will be joining the ranks of long-serving Secretary-Treasurer, Rob Norum, who retired earlier this year. Norum was replaced by Alan Rice in April.

SD5 hired Hauptman in 2013, when she was working as superintendent for Prince Rupert School District No. 52 (SD52). Hauptman had also previously worked in Kimberley, for Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 (SD6), from 1995 – 2003, making her very familiar with the area.

“Lynn was a natural choice for us at the time,” SD5 school board chair Frank Lento. “It’s well known that the board has been advocating for the replacement of Mount Baker Secondary School since 2009, and Lynn had been the site manager/principal responsible for the completion and smooth transition of students in 2002 to the newly built McKim Middle School.”

Lento says that, in addition to her experience with school replacement, Hauptman’s focus on improving student achievement results has been of immense benefit to the students, families and employees of SD5.

“Lynn nourished a strong culture of inquiry-based teaching and learning that encouraged positive, inclusive, safe and caring classrooms and improved learning outcomes for the students in our district.”

During her tenure, graduations rates were consistently above the provincial average and the district’s Aboriginal graduation rates reached parity with non-Aboriginal students.

“Our board is very appreciative of Lynn’s leadership over the past five years, and we wish her the very best in her retirement. She leaves the field of education with a great legacy of achievement.”

Hauptman currently lives in Kimberley with husband Glenn. She has three grown children, one of whom is studying for his teaching degree and plans to become a kindergarten teacher upon graduation.

The board will be engaging the services of Dr. Leroy Sloan, PhD, President of Sloan Consultants, to assist them in their search for a new superintendent. According to Lento, Sloan Consultants’ services were instrumental to the recent hiring of secretary-treasurer, Alan Rice.
