Skimmer pilot makes successful forced landing
Yesterday afternoon (August 2) a Conair 802 Air Tractor Fireboss Skimmer aircraft experienced an engine failure during operations while working on the Connell Ridge wildfire, about 15 kilometres south of Cranbrook.
The pilot conducted a successful forced landing and was transported to receive a medical assessment, BC Wildfire Service reported.
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) released a social media statement this morning, addressing the forced landing.
“This is a huge reminder about the incredible sacrifice the people in the BC Wildfire Service make day in and day out to help protect our communities.
“As they head into another day on the fire front, we want to express our deep gratitude to everyone involved in fighting the fires in our region (and beyond) – from the front lines to the teams of people supporting them,” the RDEK stated.
The BC Wildfire Service this morning reports the Connell Ridge fire is 150 ha in size and is out-of-control.
An evacuation alert has been issued for six properties in the vicinity of the fire.
