Snowfall warning for Elk Valley and Kootenay Pass
Environment Canada has issued a yet another snowfall warning for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass as well as one for the Elk Valley area that stretches from today to Sunday, Nov. 24.
“Another fall storm is expected to impact southern B.C. beginning today. The system is forecast to remain offshore over the next few days, with associated bands of precipitation pushing into the region from the south, bringing 30 to 40 cm of snow into the region,” Environment Canada stated.
“The heaviest snowfall, which is expected to meet warning criteria, is expected today; snowfall is likely to continue until early Sunday afternoon when it will taper to a few flurries.”
For the Fernie and Morrissey areas, a long period of snowfall with total amounts of 20 to 30 cm is expected during this time.
The heaviest snowfall is expected this afternoon and tonight for the area, and the highest snowfall totals are expected to be near Fernie and Morrissey.
Locally, the rest of the region is expected to receive about five more cms of snow today (Friday) with flurries continuing to Sunday.
Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.
