Snowfall warning for Kootenay Pass as system approaches

If you must drive west on Highway 3 today and tomorrow, be prepared for lots of snow in the high country.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass. Snowfall with total amounts of 20 to 25 cm is expected.

“A strong frontal system will approach the Kootenays today spreading snow to the highway passes. Light snow will become heavier this afternoon and will continue into Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of 20 to 25 cm can be expected for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass before the snow tapers off late Tuesday,” Environment Canada forecasts.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Regionally, Cranbrook, Kimberley and the Columbia Valley have a 40 to 60% chance of flurries up to Wednesday, Nov. 28, while flurries are possible in the Elk Valley today, with clearer weather after, according to Environment Canada.
