Snowfall warning for mountain parks and Kootenay Pass

Heads up if you’re heading to Alberta for the weekend or coming to the East Kootenay or travelling west over Kootenay Pass.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park areas, as well as the North Columbia and Kinbasket areas and Kootenay Pass.

Heavy snow is expected beginning later this afternoon to overnight, with 15 to 20 cm possible in the parks.

“Periods of moderate snow will intensify late this afternoon as a low pressure system moves across interior B.C. Snowfall amounts near 15 to 20 cm are expected before the heavy snow eases to a few light flurries overnight,” Environment Canada stated.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.”

There is also a snowfall warning for Kootenay Pass to Paulson Summit, with 15 to 25 cm of snow anticipated.

“An atmospheric river is bringing snow to the high elevation mountain passes in the B.C interior. Moderate snow over Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass – will intensify this afternoon,” Environment Canada stated.

“Rising freezing levels will change precipitation to rain mixed with wet snow late this evening. Currently there is still some uncertainty associated with the exact timing of this warming. As temperatures begin to cool overnight, precipitation will revert back a chance of flurries.”

While not under a snowfall warning, the Elk Valley is expected to receive between two to five cm of snow.

The Cranbrook/Kimberley and Columbia Valley areas have a 60% chance of flurries or rain showers.
