Southeast 4-H Club triumphs in the arena

By Erin Knutson

The Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds hosted Southeast 4-H Club members last weekend. Participants showed the best of their livestock to viewers and judges at the Kemlee Equipment AG for All Demo Day and Open Livestock Show last Saturday and Sunday (April 23 and 24).

“The event was all about learning. We have members coming out for their first show this weekend from ages nine and up, ” said 4-H Club Leader for Southeast Kootenay Heather Serafini.

Showmanship, grooming demos, roping, and inoculation were some of the areas covered over the two-day exhibition. In addition, family members competed in the arena, offering moral support on the sidelines as swine, beef, and sheep were paraded around the ring by beginner handlers.

“It was great to see someone go from never handling an animal to having the basic tools and confidence to compete; again, everything is learning,” said Serafini.

Participants did their best to keep the animals on course, with the odd friction between swine, bovine, and the runaway lamb with which to contend.

“Overall, it’s great to be here – and this is our first show since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Serafini.
