The CPA modernizing accounting in the East Kootenay
Women Mean Business: A Legacy of Numbers, Relationships, and Resilience — Meet Mandy Flahr
In a profession often seen as all spreadsheets and formulas, Mandy Flahr is proving that accounting can also be deeply personal, community-focused, and inspiring.

She’s a Chartered Professional Accountant with a sharp analytical mind and a heart for helping people understand their finances in ways that actually make sense. But behind the numbers is a story of family, resilience, and redefining what it means to be a woman in business.
“I’ve always loved solving puzzles,” Mandy said. “Tax and accounting are full of them.” That curiosity — combined with a natural ability to connect with people — led her to follow in the footsteps of her mother, Brenda Friedel, who founded the firm over two decades ago in Northern Alberta. A few years ago, the opportunity to expand the family business into the East Kootenay felt like more than good timing — it felt like coming home.
Now leading Flahr Friedel Professional Corporation offices in Cranbrook and Fernie, Mandy is building on her mother’s legacy while bringing a fresh perspective and modern tools to the table.
“It’s been such a rewarding journey,” she reflects. “Growing the practice in a place that already had deep personal meaning to us has made it all the more fulfilling.”
In an industry that can feel intimidating, Mandy’s approach is refreshingly grounded. “We’re not a big firm with layers of hierarchy — we’re a business helping other businesses,” she explained. “We understand the day-to-day challenges because we’re living them too.” Whether it’s coaching her team, reviewing files, or meeting one-on-one with clients, Mandy’s work is about creating clarity and building trust.
What truly sets her firm apart is the commitment to making financial services approachable, responsive, and human. “People don’t want jargon,” Mandy said. “They want someone who’ll sit down, explain things clearly, and walk through it together.”
It hasn’t always been easy. As a younger woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Mandy has faced her share of assumptions. “I’ve been mistaken for the assistant more times than I can count,” she said with a laugh. But she doesn’t let it define her. “I let the results speak for themselves.”
Her biggest professional accomplishment? Opening and growing the second office from the ground up. “Watching it grow, seeing the community embrace us — that’s been incredibly rewarding.”
Still, Mandy’s proudest moments are more personal. “Success is when your work supports your life — not the other way around,” she said. “For me, that means being present with my family, enjoying camping trips, early morning coffee, or a movie night with my kids.”
Lessons from a trailblazer
At the heart of Mandy’s journey is her mother. “Brenda built this firm from nothing — with integrity, grit, and a deep connection to her clients. She’s my biggest mentor.” Now working together, they’re blending decades of experience with modern insights to serve a new generation of clients.
The accounting world is evolving, and Mandy is at the forefront of that change. “Cloud-based tools and automation are changing how we work — but more than ever, people want personalized advice and human connection,” she explained. “Tech helps, but trust is everything.”
Her advice to other women looking to start a business? “Trust your instincts and stay true to your values. Build something that reflects who you are, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Keep learning and surround yourself with people who lift you up.”
From sponsoring local events to volunteering time and resources, Mandy’s firm is deeply invested in the communities it serves. “We’re here to help people navigate their challenges — not just during tax season, but all year round. That connection matters.”
And in a world of fast-paced transactions, she’s committed to building something that lasts. “We’re in this for the long haul. We want to be the firm people trust not just today, but 10, 15 years down the line.”
Balance, laughter, and a good cup of coffee
So how does Mandy stay grounded? “I set boundaries where I can, and I remind myself this is a marathon, not a sprint,” she says. She celebrates small wins, makes time for fresh air and laughter, and leans into the support of her team. “Staying connected with staff is key — it’s all a collaborative effort.”
Want to connect? Stop by their Cranbrook or Fernie office, give them a call at 778-550-2195, or email [email protected]. You can also find Mandy and her team on Facebook and Instagram — and if you’re lucky, maybe catch them at a local community event too.
As she continues to grow the business with integrity and purpose, Mandy Flahr is proving that in the world of accounting, compassion and clarity are just as important as numbers and strategy.
Because in Mandy’s world, women don’t just mean business — they lead it.
