US fire visible in Koocanusa area

EK Fire Front Update

Just a quick update on a fire that started late yesterday south of the Canadian border. It is being called the Mount Robinson Fire and is burning in the US approximately one to two km into Montana, about 18 kilometres southwest of Newgate. It is burning in high elevation and is quite visible from the Koocanusa area.

On the US side, they have personnel, one piece of heavy equipment, air-tankers and heavy lift helicopters on the fire today. The BC Wildfire Service flew the fire this morning and is working cooperatively with their US counterparts and establishing plans should that fire cross the border onto the Canadian side. The fire is currently estimated at 178 hectares in size.

The White River Fire Complex today has 45 firefighters, three helicopters and four pieces of heavy equipment on it. The newly expanded forest service road restrictions currently in effect in this area are available online.

The Complex consists of the Grave Creek and White River Fires – both are burning in remote areas well past Whiteswan and currently pose no threats to communities or structures.

The Quinn Creek fire, which is burning in a high elevation remote area east of Top of the World Provincial Park is now estimated at 411 hectares in size. It is being monitored daily and is posing no threats to structures or communities. The White Creek fire, which is northwest of Kimberley is still estimated at 30 hectares in size and continues to be monitored daily.

It will be windy tonight through tomorrow with the potential for stronger gusts. There is also the chance of isolated thunderstorms developing, along with dry lightning or lightning and showers, across the region between now and Friday morning.

Reminder that the Off Road Vehicle prohibition and campfire ban remain in effect.
