Busy day shows policing is a dynamic profession

Frontline officers were called in multiple directions during what turned out to be an eventful day January 15 in the Elk Valley.

The day began with a call to the Elk Valley RCMP by staff at the Fording River Mine site reporting that an elderly man had shown up there and that he seemed very disoriented.

Frontline officers met the elderly man who it turns out was a missing person out of Alberta who had no idea where he was. Officers assisted in getting the man and his truck back to Sparwood where he was met by family members who brought him back to his home in Alberta safe and sound.

Later in the morning the Elk Valley RCMP was called to assist in setting up a landing area for a seriously injured snowboarder in need of immediate transportation by STARS emergency helicopter.

BC Ambulance Service was able to assist and get the snowboarder to the immediate medical attention they required.

In the afternoon a roommate dispute took a turn for the worse when a Fernie man became aggressive towards police officers on scene.

The frontline officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and after having multiple items thrown at them by the man the officers were attempting to leave the residence in their police vehicles.

The man decided to chase down and punch the windows of the police vehicles leading to a windshield being broken. The officers placed the man under arrest and during the altercation he threatened the lives of the members and further damaged the police vehicle after being placed in the rear seat of the car.

The man is currently in custody with numerous charges recommended to the BC Prosecution Service.

Policing is a dynamic profession and days like this keep our officers on their toes. We continue to appreciate the ongoing support we experience in the Elk Valley community and we are proud to do our part in keeping our communities safe.
