Coal Creek Road repair begins Monday
Coal Creek Road reconstruction work will begin Monday, January 24.
Coal Creek was a ferocious torrent on November 14-15 when an “atmospheric river event” brought massive rainfall to southern British Columbia that undermined embankment slopes, structures at the Fernie Rifle Range, washed away several sections of Coal Creek Road from Ridgemont Road to the Coal Creek Snowmobile staging area, and cut off access to the bridge further up the valley.
As a result, the road structure of Fernie Coal Creek Road was compromised in several sections and road rebuilding is required. The pictures (above and right) are some of the damages taken by a drone aerial camera from November 30, 2021.
Work will occur Monday to Friday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and is anticipated to take five weeks.
Construction equipment such as tandem trucks hauling road base repair material and excavators placing rip rap material will have a strong presence during the reconstruction of Coal Creek Road.
Expect traffic delays, traffic control personnel, stockpiles of road base repair material, do not enter construction areas, and single lane alternating traffic as more sections of Coal Creek Road is repaired.
Do note that there will be a noticeable amount of dump trucks present in residential areas during the work hours Monday to Friday hauling the road base repair material and rip rap for the shore bank reinforcement work.
The location of work is to take place on Coal Creek Road at various locations between the red arrows as shown in the map below.
