Crowsnest closed due to smoke

Highway 3 is currently closed from Coleman, Alberta (Crowsnest Pass) to the British Columbia border due to a fire in the area that has resulted in near zero visibility in smoke.

Expect major delays, reported Mainroad East Kootenay LP at 10 p.m. this evening (Oct. 17).

At this time there is no ETA on when the highway will be re-opened.

Steps are being taken to hold traffic in Sparwood until the highway is reopened, Mainroad said.

Please continue to check DriveBC and/or Alberta 511 for updates.

If you see a concern that affects the Ministry Roadways do not hesitate to contact their 24-hour Communication Centre at 1-800-665-4929.

The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass earlier this evening declared a State of Local Emergency due to a wildfire located between the Sentinel Industrial Park and Coleman.

The fire is currently classified as out of control and Willow Drive, McLaren Ridge, and Carbondale Trailer Court have already been evacuated. MacGillivray is currently being evacuated.

A Reception Centre is being opened at the Vertical Church in Pincher Creek which is located at 1200 Ken Thorton Blvd. Evacuated residents are asked to please register with Church by phoning 403-904-0021.
