Discovering the Elk River this summer
The Elk River Alliance (ERA), with support form fishers, municipal planners, tourism professionals, river guides and paddlers, is releasing the first ever Elk River Map & Guide on June 28.
“The Elk River is an anchor recreational experience for locals and visitors throughout the summer,” said Lee-Anne Walker, ERA Executive Director. “People want to know where there are public access points, recommendations for sections of the river for safe experiences, natural/cultural information about the river, and easy to understand fishing tips and regulations. ERA surveyed our partners in the winter to see what they wanted to include in the map and guide. They also said what to leave out, like favourite fishing holes!”
The Elk River Map & Guide is a waterproof map that can be used on the water and will last for years. It is sold Elk Valley wide for $10 at visitor centres/chambers of commerce, where fishing licenses are sold, and participating businesses, as well at at the ERA office at 891 – 2nd Avenue Fernie. Revenue generated from the sales supports river conservation activites in our watershed.
In addition to the map and guide is the Elk River Geocache, a cross between technology, outdoor exploration and treasure hunting. Using a GPS or an app on a cell phone, search for 14 Elk River Geocaches from the headwaters at Elk Lakes Provincial Park to the mouth at Lake Koocanusa. Solve puzzles with clues from each site and enter to win prizes on BC Rivers Day, end of September. To download the Geocache information visit www.elkriveralliance.ca/geocache
“The Geocache is a fun, family-friendly summer activity outdoors for locals and visitors alike. We want to see people connecting with their watershed in a safe and sustainable manner,” encourages Walker. “Get your Elk River Map & Guide today!” Thanks to the Columbia Basin Trust, Tourism Fernie, Teck, District of Sparwood, and Canadian Tire for funding this initiative.
The ERA is our local community based water group connecting people to the Elk River keeping it drinkable, fishable and swimmable for future generations.
