Dog succumbs from injuries after heroic rescue effort

Sparwood Search and Rescue rope rescue technicians, along with members of Elkford Search and Rescue, were called by RCMP on Thursday night (July 12) to rescue a dog that had slipped over an embankment and down a series of cliffs at Josephine Falls east of Elkford.

While rescuing animals isn’t a primary SAR function, it’s not uncommon for SAR volunteers to help out in cases where technical rescue skills are needed to safely reach a pet in distress, Sparwood SAR outlined in a Facebook post.

“The terrain at Josephine Falls is extremely hazardous and the dog’s family definitely did the right thing by calling for help instead of attempting a rescue themselves,” SAR stated.

“One of our rope technicians was lowered nearly 90 metres down the cliffs and was able to reach the dog and bring him back up to his family. Unfortunately though, the dog did succumb to the injuries he sustained in the fall. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to his family,” SAR said.
