Elk Valley RCMP Report

Vehicle in Elk River

You just don’t know what you will find in the Elk River.

On May 20, a local resident was bicycling along the trails near the Elk River when he spotted what looked like a vehicle upside down and partially submerged in the river.

Sparwood RCMP, Fire Department and Search and Rescue (SAR) attended to the scene.

Sparwood SAR’s swift water rescue team approached the submerged vehicle and determined that the four wheels were only attached to a frame and drivetrain. The “vehicle” had clearly been in the river for sometime and likely dislodged due to high/fast moving water.

SAR was able to remove the vehicle from the river without further incident.

RCMP would like to remind residents to be cautious around area rivers that are currently running high and fast. River banks may have been undermined by the high/fast moving water and could potentially give way underfoot.

Arson at Fernie Prentice Park

On May 22, an anonymous individual contacted the City of Fernie to report a fire inside a garbage can, located inside the men’s washroom at the park.

Fortunately, there was no damage to the building, just the foul smell of burnt plastic. If you have any information regarding this arson, please call the Elk Valley RCMP Detachment’s Fernie office at 250-423-4404.

Vandals strike at the Caithness Creek Rest Area

Over the first weekend in June, unknown culprit(s) targeted the Caithness Creek Rest Area by turning over Port O Potties and driving over a wood/concrete picnic table with either motor/dirk bikes. The damage to the picnic table was extensive. Anyone with information with respect to this act of vandalism is encouraged to contact the Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6333.
