The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the June 26 District of Elkford council meeting.
Council Youth Representatives
Council expressed their appreciation to the Junior and Senior Council Youth Representatives (Erin Mills and Erica Vogt pictured above with Mayor Dean McKerracher), as their term on District Council came to an end.
RDEK Community Energy Work Plan
Megan Lohmann, Head of Community Energy Management, presented an update on the Energy Work Plan for the East Kootenay. The program includes the following components: homes, solid waste, and clean energy vehicles. She advised that the Province has implemented the BC Energy Step Code. The plan aims to improve energy efficiency through incentives to builders in 5 steps over the next 15 years for all new construction. Ms. Lohmann also provided a summary on the strategy to build a clean vehicle charging network in the East Kootenay.
Devonian Playground
Andrea Gagnon and Kathryn Kitt advised council that extensive fundraising efforts have raised $147,700 towards the Devonian Playground project. The Elkford Community Enhancement Society is still seeking partners to make up the necessary funds. Council invited the society to report again closer to the planned day of park equipment installation.
Annual General Meeting
Council approved the 2017 Annual Report and received a report from the district’s auditor. The report confirmed no irregularities in the district’s financial records.
Lagoon Redevelopment
Council approved the lagoon redevelopment plan for the purpose of soccer fields and a bike dirt jump park.
District Municipal Building
A new District Municipal Building was approved that will be located south of the Community Conference Centre, on Fording Drive. The construction is planned to commence next year.
