The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the April 23 District of Elkford council meeting.
Citizens of the Year
Rob and Jo Ann Turner (pictured) were named Elkford’s 2018 Citizens of the Year. The Turners were nominated for their extensive volunteer work in a variety of community organizations including the Elkford Community Garden, Mountain Meadows Golf Club and Elkford Search and Rescue. Their selfless dedication and efforts help make Elkford a great place to live, work, play and learn.
RCMP Presentation of the 2018 First Quarter Crime Statistics
Elk Valley RCMP’s Cpl. Bob Wright presented crime statistics for the District of Elkford. The report represented some of the calls for police service within the District during the first quarter of 2018.
National Day of Mourning
Council will be represented at the ceremony on April 28 in Sparwood. The National Day of Mourning commemorates workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered illness due to workplace hazards and incidents. The district will also fly its flags at half-mast to honour those workers.
Tax Rate Bylaw No. 807, 2018
The bylaw received its first three readings. This bylaw will generate a property tax increase in revenue for the district at approximately 5.7%, and an overall increase in total property taxes of approximately three per cent for an average single-family dwelling. The bylaw is expected to be adopted at the Special Council Meeting on May 7 at 6 p.m. in council chambers.
District of Elkford and Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Financial Assistance Grants
Council has approved and supported a variety of District of Elkford grants for local groups totalling $13,700 and various in-kind support for projects and events throughout 2018. It has also supported the Elkford Housing Society, Elkford Search and Rescue, and the Elkford Snowmobile Club in assistance within the district’s budget. Council has put forth approval of the CBT grants in the amount of $33,851.25 to the Regional District of East Kootenay, which operates the CBT grant process.
