$24 million upgrade hits major milestone
The upgrade of Fernie Substation reached a significant milestone this month when the new 25 mega – volt amp transformer and 25 kilovolt switchyard were successfully energized.
Together they are now providing power to Fernie and surrounding areas.
“BC Hydro in collaboration with Amec Foster Wheeler and Nupqu Development Corporation has worked safely and diligently to reach this accomplishment,” said BC Hydro construction technologist Hristo Nikolov. “It’s put us in a great position to hit the ground running in the New Year and to be able to meet the anticipated project in – service date, scheduled for spring 2018.”
As an added bonus, this milestone comes ahead of the holiday shutdown period from December 15 to January 2, allowing workers to head home and be with their families.
The Fernie Substation was built in the early 1970s. The original equipment was reaching its end of life and required upgrading with new technology and equipment. The expansion allows BC Hydro to continue providing clean, reliable power to the community (that’s about 5,000 homes and businesses) now and in the future. Construction of the $24 million substation upgrade project began in September 2016.
