City believes it made a fair offer

The City of Fernie believes it presented Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2093 with a fair offer and hopes a strike can be averted.

cupe-fernieCity unionized workers Nov. 9 voted 98% in favour of a strike vote.

“The city believes it made a fair offer and we are very surprised to read the union’s response. We value all of our employees and appreciate their contributions greatly,” Mayor Mary Giuliano told e-KNOW this afternoon.

The city presented its final offer to the union on September 29, which included 9.25% in wage increases over five years, retroactive to March 1, 2015, and increased health benefits.

“The city and union are only apart on one issue: Currently, changes to work schedules must be agreed to by the union. The city proposes that scheduling changes should be agreed to by the employee and their supervisor at the worksite and employees may request union representation if required,” the city stated in a letter last week.
