City CUPE workers vote 98% to strike

City of Fernie unionized workers (Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2093) Nov. 9 voted 98% in favour of a strike vote.

“The (union bargaining) committee is very, very happy with the support our membership has show for their union and their bargaining committee,” stated CUPE National Representative Keith Nielson in a press release.

“The membership made it clear to us that they will not accept any concessions demanded by the city. The implied threats that the city included in their public notice that was sent to the employees on Nov. 4 will not be tolerated. We’re not going to be bullied into a bad deal. We hope that once mayor and council sees the solidarity of our membership they will order their team back to the bargaining table instead of wasting time and money trying to divide us.”

CUPE Local 2093 represents City of Fernie workers at city hall, Leisure Services (Memorial Arena and Aquatic Centre) and the Public Works department.
