City of Fernie urging people to keep clear of closed areas

The City of Fernie is urging the public to please avoid all closed roads, trails and public spaces, to ensure the safety of the community.

“We understand people are curious about the impacts this storm has had, so we’re sharing some photos here,” the city stated on Facebook this afternoon (Nov. 16).

Until further notice, the city asks please stay safe by avoiding the following locations:

Max Turyk Soccer Fields – Avoid any contact or use of the soccer pitch and field as the soil and turf are in a highly vulnerable state. The regular season of use is over, and we ask everyone avoid the field entirely until we experience consistent freezing temperatures that will firm up the area.

Railway Underpass Trail between Pine Ave and Park Ave – Closed due to extreme danger and bank erosion.

Dogwood Park Trail to Park Ave – Closed due to flooding (pictured above).

Montane Recreation Trails, Ridgemont Recreation Trails, and Fernie Ridge Trails – Closed to the public until further notice for safety and remediation.

Coal Creek Road – Several dangerous washouts have resulted in this road being closed (see below), preventing access to popular recreational areas such as the Rifle Range and Microwave Towers until repairs can be completed over the coming months. PLEASE AVOID THIS DANGEROUS AREA.

River Road Extension – Road is washed out and impassable.

Montane Parkway – Montane neighbourhood can be accessed via Slalom Drive.

Cokato Road – Accessible from the north to Thompson Road, but remains impassable at the intersection of Thompson Road. While repairs are still underway, Cokato Road is now passable approximately 100m north of the cattleguard at Morrissey. Residents of Thompson Road and Cokato Road south of Thompson Road now can exit via Morrissey.

Highway 3 between Cunliffe Road and Caldwell Frontage is still closed in both directions (four km east of Fernie). A detour is in effect via Dicken Road.

Stay tuned to www.drivebc.ca for highway closures.

Check out the city’s Facebook page for the latest update on flooding and closures.
