City pausing MPCC project as grants denied

Site plan

The City of Fernie has been notified that it was unsuccessful in grant applications for funding for the construction of a newĀ Multi-Purpose Community CentreĀ (MPCC).

Federal and provincial funding was announced in the fall of 2018 that was specific to community, recreation and culture infrastructure through theĀ Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) ā€“ Rural and Northern CommunitiesĀ fund, andĀ ICIP ā€“ Community, Culture and Recreation Program.

The city applied for grants through these two available funding streams, seeking to fund between 75% and 90% of the MPCC.

Given the unsuccessful applications and the current COVID-19 situation, the city has determined it is not the appropriate time to pursue borrowing or to engage with the public on reviewing the MPCC project.

Once the city has recovered from the COVID-19 emergency, administrative staff will provide council with options for re-engaging with the community regarding the scope, scale, phasing, and importance of the MPCC project, the city outlined on its website today (March 31).
