Fernie presents refined Fire Hall replacement budget
The City of Fernie has presented a refined $16 million budget for a new fire hall.
This includes: construction ($13.6M), contingency ($2M), utility servicing, site access, insurance, and upgrades to local ball diamonds to offset impacts to Servello Field.
To fund this urgently needed facility, the city will draw on reserves, apply for grant funding, seek a contribution from the RDEK, and borrow.
A key part of the funding strategy is a new $7 M grant opportunity through the Strategic Priorities Fund. To remain eligible, all other funding needs to be confirmed before the September 12 application deadline.
No referendum?
Due to recent changes in provincial legislation (June 2025), municipalities can now borrow increased amounts without voter approval.
Council will consider using this new authority at a Special Meeting on July 15 and approving a loan authorization bylaw to fund the fire hall and keep this project on track for grant eligibility and avoid costly delays.
