Griz Days granted $10,000 for 2022

By Erin Knutson

The City of Fernie council approved $10,000 in funding for the 45th annual Griz Days 2022 at its Monday (July 12) regular council meeting.

Staff recommended the amount, following a request of $15,000 from the Fernie Chamber of Commerce (FCC), with further funding to be determined.

“The Chamber does require some commitment to funding for the planning of the 45th Annual Griz Days for next year for the amount of $10,000,” said Fernie Chief Administrative Officer Michael Boronowski.

Council tabled questions over the procurement of the amount, with Coun. Phil Iddon seeking confirmation on whether the amount would be a cash payment to the organizer or staff’s commitment to monetary and in-kind contributions.

According to Boronowski, funding would be cash to the FCC as part of a partnering agreement to Griz Days that the city will host- it has been given priority based on its anniversary and adherence to Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) Funding criteria.

“Griz Days was identified as a core event as part of a list created for funding, hosting, and contributing to events within the municipality,” said a city staff report.

Total funding for Griz Days is contingent on a final report to the city following the event.

“Ten per cent is held back until the report is provided back to the city after the event – this does not include the in-kind staff time and other contributions the city should make. However, it does allow planning to begin, and it does allow staff to be engaged – as well as any other reports to be provided, recognizing that it is an anniversary year next year,” said Boronowski.
