Mountain biker killed in accident near Fernie

On July 1, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP was notified by BC Ambulance Service of a mountain bike rider in serious condition in the Coal Creek area near Fernie.

Fernie Search and Rescue, BC Ambulance Service, and Elk Valley RCMP frontline officers responded. Life saving efforts were made but the man succumbed to his injuries.

The man was an experienced rider, was wearing appropriate protective gear and was familiar with the trail.

The death is not being deemed suspicious and appears to have been a highly unfortunate accident.

The Fernie Trails Alliance was engaged and was a tremendous help in making sure that the incident was communicated in a timely manner.

The Elk Valley RCMP want to express our condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist.

Fernie Trails Alliance temporarily closed Trail Dogs following the tragic incident. The trail was re-opened earlier today (July 2).

“Our organization and the entire trail community are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to the family, friends, and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time,” the FTA noted on social media.

“The FTA would like to thank the incredible team at Fernie Search and Rescue, Fernie BC Ambulance and the Elk Valley RCMP who attended the scene.”
