Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Elk Valley, with snowfall amounts from 20 to 30 cm expected by tonight.

“Arctic air arriving from the east will combine with an approaching low pressure system and spread snow throughout the Elk Valley region today. Snow will end overnight as the low moves eastward,” Environment Canada outlined in its warning.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

DriveBC reports winter driving conditions from Fernie to Sparwood and to the Alberta border. Be alert on Highway 43 to Elkford as well.

Additionally, the snowfall warning issued Sept. 30 for Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park areas remains in effect, with along period of snowfall with total amounts of 20 to 30 cm continuing.

A weather system will continue to bring snow to the Yoho Park – Kootenay Park areas. A further 10 cm of snow is expected today.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Heavy snowfall accumulation may cause tree branches to break.

Conditions are more severe on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. Highway 1 west of Banff earlier this morning. DriveBC image
