Snowfall warning for the Elk Valley

Sorry about this Elk Valley residents – but Environment Canada and Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting have issued snowfall warnings for the Elk Valley.

Rain is anticipated to change to heavy snow Tuesday, with snowfall accumulation between 10 to 20 cm.

Elk Valley remains under the influence of a warm airmass which will continue to draw in moisture, therefore precipitation in the form of rain will continue into tonight, Environment Canada reported.

“Precipitation will then change over to snow Tuesday morning for Sparwood and Tuesday near noon for Fernie. Snowfall will continue into Wednesday morning, with the heaviest snow expected late Tuesday afternoon and early evening. Snow will taper off to a few flurries near midday Wednesday.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” Environment Canada said.

The snowfall warning does not include the Cranbrook/Kimberley, Columbia Valley and Kootenay National Park areas.

Snow flurries are forecast for Kootenay National Park Nov. 1 and 2.

Mainroad reminds the public its 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on all observations and concerns to its crews when contacted.

Remember to drive to the conditions and check www.drivebc.ca for updates.
