Baldy Ridge committee recruitment underway
The District of Sparwood is recruiting members to a new advisory committee to council that will help better understand and guide the management of impacts on the community from Baldy Ridge Extension at Teck’s Elkview Operations.
Under the Environmental Assessment certificate for Teck’s Baldy Ridge Extension (BRE) at Elkview Operations, a Socio-Community and Economic Effects Management Plan is being developed by Teck and the District of Sparwood, which will include creation of a Socio-Community and Economic Effects Advisory Committee, with representation from the district, Teck and members of the community.
The committee will receive information and data from Teck, review plans and provide Sparwood council with recommendations on the mitigation measures for any adverse effects that BRE may have on the Sparwood community.
The district is seeking volunteers for this Advisory Committee now, and hopes to have the group working before summer, 2018. The committee will work with district staff to coordinate a Livability Study in 2018 which will study the past, present, and future quality of life in Sparwood. In addition to indicators related to the mining industry, this may include studying community demographics, recreation opportunities, property values, transportation, and other measures of quality of life.
Sparwood Mayor Cal McDougall is excited for this new initiative: “This committee is a new step in our community’s relationship with Teck and the legacy that all of us leave on this land for future generations. We are excited for this opportunity for community members to get involved in developing this relationship and understanding the impacts of BRE on our community.”
“Teck is looking forward to working collaboratively with local residents to support the continued sustainable growth of the community and responsible advancement of the Baldy Ridge Project,” said Don Sander, General Manager, Elkview Operations. “Baldy Ridge Extension will extend the life of Elkview, supporting continued jobs and economic activity from the operation for decades to come.”
