Rise in vandalism at leisure centre

A marked increase in vandalism at the Sparwood Leisure Centre has prompted the Sparwood Recreation Department (SRD) to reach out to the community via social media, asking for people to remain vigilant and responsible.

“This summer we have seen a significant increase in vandalism at the leisure centre grounds. Each time these events occur it takes resources away from programs and other work that helps maintain all recreation infrastructure. So far this summer we estimate over $8,000 worth of damage has occurred with over a 100 hour of staff time to fix the damage,” the SRD reported.

“The latest incident involved an individual that drove a truck around the leisure centre grounds doing donuts at 3 a.m. on Saturday July 29 tearing up the sports field.

“Please help us keep our leisure centre and parks the wonderful asset that they are by encouraging those that are not respecting our facilities to think twice before they continue to damage our facilities. Thank you.”
