Sparwood Council Facts
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the May 26 and June 2 meetings of District of Sparwood council.
Special Meeting of Council May 26
At a Special Meeting of Council held on May 26, council considered several time‑sensitive operational and capital matters.
Council reviewed and authorized the execution of a new Upper Elk Valley Fire Protection Services Agreement with the Regional District of East Kootenay, establishing service and funding arrangements for the 2026–2030 period.
Council also approved a $3,000 in-kind community funding request from the Sparwood Mixed Slow Pitch League. Council also considered advanced planning for community amenities through discussion of the Centennial Plaza Stage and Washroom Project, including approval to apply for external grant funding and reallocate existing capital funds if the grant is successful.
In addition, council approved proceeding with the Curling Rink Primary Structural Roof Beams Upgrade, authorizing a construction contract to address facility safety and longevity.

PUBLIC HEARING
Liquor Licence Application – Game On: Indoor Playground, Bowling & Rec Room
The District of Sparwood was notified of an application to the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for a liquor primary licence from the owners of Game On: Indoor Playground, Bowling & Rec Room located at 101- 1290 Ponderosa Drive.
Council chose to hold a public hearing to receive feedback and there were two people who spoke in favour of the application. At the regular meeting of council following the public hearing, council voted to provide feedback in support of the application.
BYLAWS
Election and Assent Voting Bylaw
Council considered the Election and Assent Voting Bylaw No. 1373, 2026. This bylaw supports the administration of local government elections and consolidates the district’s election framework by repealing and replacing Election and Assent Voting Bylaw No. 1211, 2018 and Automated Vote Counting System Authorization and Procedure Bylaw No. 1297, 2022, while maintaining compliance with the legislative requirements of the Local Government Act. It was given first three readings and will be brought back for adoption at a future meeting.
BUSINESS
Environmental Services: Solid Waste Management
Council discussed the implementation of the Solid Waste Management program, including communication and public education strategies to support resident understanding and participation. Feedback was gathered on communication and public education strategies to support resident understanding and encourage participation in the program.
