Sparwood SAR rescue injured hiker

Sparwood Search and Rescue (SAR) was called out last night by BC Ambulance to the Flathead Pass area southeast of Sparwood, where a hiker had sustained a shoulder injury after a fall and was unable to hike back out.

An initial response team was sent to the area by helicopter while a ground team with ATVs was assembled to assist if needed, as the subject’s exact location was unclear. After a brief search the subject’s party was located, and she was flown out of the area to a waiting ambulance.

Like much of the backcountry in the Kootenays, the Flathead area is considered very remote as there is almost no communication infrastructure and emergency response times are often measured in hours or even longer depending on terrain, weather and darkness. When recreating in these areas it’s vital to train and prepare for emergencies, take essential equipment and have a detailed trip plan.
