Sparwood seeks coordinator for Canada Day event

The District of Sparwood is urgently seeking community volunteers to keep the annual Canada Day celebration alive.

Without volunteer commitment, the event is at risk of being reduced to a ceremonial cake cutting, instead of the usual festivities’ residents have enjoyed in the past.

For the past 10 years, the district has worked with individuals in the community to help organize the annual event. The District of Sparwood supplies the venue and provides funds towards the celebration. The volunteer coordinator, working with district staff, organizes a variety of events and activities, bounce houses, a pancake breakfast and recruits volunteers needed to host the event.

The current volunteer coordinator is no longer able to assist with the event and efforts to recruit a new coordinator have not resulted in any individuals or groups coming forward to take the lead.

Without a community group or volunteers to organize the event for 2020, Canada Day in Sparwood will be condensed to a ceremonial cake cutting.

“Events like Canada Day are what make Sparwood such a wonderful place to live,” said Mayor David Wilks.  “The district is unable to undertake these events by ourselves and that’s where we need the community to take an active role in keeping events like Canada Day alive.”

The current event involves about 20 to 30 hours of pre-event organization. The day of, usually requires about a dozen volunteers to help setup, monitor the activities and take down the event.  The activities that run throughout the celebration are not set in stone, so a group that can take on the event could change it as much or as little as they would like.

Each year Sparwood Canada Day sees about four to seven hundred people between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on July 1.

The district is requiring confirmation of a coordinator within the next two weeks to ensure the Canada Day celebratory event will continue.
