Stolen vehicle discovery leads to arrest

On May 1, at 9:18 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP was performing patrols in the West Fernie area when an officer observed a white Mercedes in the parking lot of a condo unit. The officer ran the vehicle plate and it came back as stolen from Nanaimo.

Further investigation by the officer noted that the vehicle was related to a person of interest in a number of fraud complaints in the Elk Valley.

While the vehicle was being loaded onto a tow truck, the person of interest was seen to exit the complex and approach the officer, demanding to know why “his car” was being towed. The 48-year-old Caucasian man was subsequently arrested.

“A search of the vehicle led police to find items related to other ongoing investigations in our area,” reported Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen.

The man was later released on an undertaking with conditions related to the offence. The vehicle is being held to return to the registered owner.

The investigation is ongoing; file 2023-1175 refers.
