Changes coming for Kimberley council

By Nowell Berg

City of Kimberley council will be a different entity following the October 15 municipal election, with three incumbent councillors not seeking re-election.

Coun. Darryl Oakley

Coun. Darryl Oakley confirmed to e-KNOW that he will not run for council, but he will seek election as a School Board Trustee with School District No. 6.

Coun. Oakley said, “Three terms is enough. I want to try something new, take on a different challenge.”

He added the trustee position continues his interest in public service.

Another three-term councillor is not seeking election.

Coun. Kent Goodwin

Coun. Kent Goodwin said August 22 he will “not run in the fall elections.”

Summing up his three-terms on council, Goodwin said, “I hope I’ve been able to contribute.”

His Aspen project is “up and running, that’s going to take up a bunch of my time.”

Coun. Nigel Kitto told e-KNOW, “After two terms on Kimberley city council I have decided not to run again.”

Coun. Nigel Kitto

Going forward, Kitto will be focusing on his nursing career. “The skills and knowledge I have gained in local politics and the relationships formed will continue to enhance all aspects of my personal and professional life.

“It has been an amazing experience to serve our city, and to understand a lot better what it takes to maintain and improve our municipality. Cooperation has been an important factor, and I am heartened by the way the mayor and council have worked together for the betterment of Kimberley despite our differences – something seemingly rare in politics these days,” he stated.

“I am thankful for our hard working city staff, rising to the challenge to maintain and improve upon aging infrastructure whilst providing services enviable of other municipalities. To my friends, colleagues, teammates, fellow volunteers and others who supported me over my eight years on council I thank you for your insights and honesty in sharing your ideas and concerns. I especially feel honoured to have been first elected as a fresh Canadian citizen and still relatively new to Kimberley.”

Mayor Don McCormick, who will seek a third-term, said, “When you say you’ve made some contribution, it’s been an outstanding contribution. I know that council, staff and the entire community feels exactly the same way. Thank you very much for all your service.”
