It’s Hip to Be Square – Two
Kimberley, it’s been a long cold snap and it’s time to warm up on the square dance floor!
Serious fun for all ages, kids to grandparents and every age in between will be smiling wider at the end of this Friday, January 20 evening.
Two years ago, many will remember the swirling good time had by all at the first ‘It’s Hip to Be Square’ event. This second rendition will also be a fundraiser for the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank, with all proceeds going directly to help feed local families. These events have been rocking crowds in various communities, including Fernie and Canmore the past few years, the fun is contagious!
Twirly skirts and handsome shirts are encouraged, but you can wear anything you’re comfortable to move in… and you will move! From circles to do-si-dos, allemandes to swinging promenades, the whole room moves together in different patterns and fully inclusive fun.
A stage full of rocking musicians and a live square dance caller will keep the crowd hopping all night at Centennial Hall, 6:30-11 p.m. A cash bar will be onsite, along with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks available for purchase. At $10 a ticket, it’s easy on the pocketbook too.

Professional square dance caller from Alberta, Leslie Bauman Gotfrit, will lead the evening dances. The Kootenay Stringbenders band backing her up include a bunch of local Kootenay favourites, Mike and Anie Hepher (RedGirl), Cosima Wells, Heather Gemmell and Paige Lennox (Rosie Brown Band), Stacey Decosse, Alex Buterman and others including musicians travelling all the way from Revelstoke and Canmore.
It doesn’t matter if you have never square danced before or if you are a closet expert never given the chance to show off your moves…everyone is encouraged and comfortable in this supportive environment. The gift of Gotfrit’s professional calling is how simple she makes the moves.
Dancing is one of the best ways to bring a community together, and square dancing is pure ‘ol timey fun for all!
