Kimberley backs borrowing for wastewater treatment
City of Kimberley council will feature four new voices after today’s election and they will have to help oversee the launch of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant, which voters overwhelmingly approved in an election day referendum.
Newcomer Sue Cairns and incumbent Jason McBain each earned 1,349 votes to join acclaimed Mayor Don McCormick on the city’s new council.
Also elected are incumbent Sandra Roberts (1,190 votes) and newcomers Steven Royer (1,029), Woody Maguire (943) and Kevin Dunnebacke (885).
Craig Janzen came close with 881 votes and Andrew Skaien tallied 799 votes.
Kimberley voters also overwhelmingly supported the referendum: Are you in favour of City Council adopting the City of Kimberley Wastewater Treatment Plant Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 2703, 2022, which authorizes the City of Kimberley to borrow up to $35 million dollars to be repaid over a period not to exceed 30 year in order to finance the costs of constructing a wastewater treatment facility and associated infrastructure?
Voters supported the question 1,545 to 259.
