Man arrested in stolen vehicle facing charges
A 20-year-old male is facing numerous charges after being arrested Sunday night in possession of a stolen vehicle.
A Kimberley RCMP officer noted a suspicious vehicle on Ross Street around 11 p.m. on May 14. He did a check on the Alberta license plate and found it had been stolen out of Calgary on May 8.
The officer activated his emergency equipment and the driver of the stolen vehicle accelerated and headed east on Highway 95A. The officer witnessed the vehicle as it turned onto Houle Creek FSR near the Mainroad Highways Yard.
The officer, with support from Cranbrook RCMP, searched for the vehicle in the wooded area and was able to locate it. A male and female were arrested and lodged in Cranbrook cells.
The male was already facing numerous charges in Calgary and was on conditions. He appeared in Cranbrook Provincial Court on Monday charged with Possession of Stolen Property and three counts of Failure to Comply with Conditions. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
Police have since gathered evidence relating to Dangerous Driving, Driving while Prohibited and Evading Police. The female has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property and has been released for court in July.
“Exceptional observation skills and team work between Cranbrook and Kimberley officers led to the safe apprehension of the subjects. These types of incidents pose a huge risk to others as drivers of stolen vehicles have no regard for public safety,” said Sgt. Chris Newel, Kimberley RCMP Detachment commander.
