Notes from City Hall

Property Tax Deadline

City of Kimberley property tax notices have been mailed to all property owners on record. The deadline for payment of your 2019 property taxes is July 2, at 4:45 p.m., after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current year taxes. If you haven’t received your Tax Notice by the end of May, please contact City Hall at 250-427-5311 or [email protected] and request that a copy be forwarded to you.

Payment of your property taxes can be made by mail, in person at City Hall, by phone or internet banking, or at most financial institutions. Cheques post-dated to July 2, 2019 will be accepted at City Hall in advance of the deadline. If paying by mail or electronic methods, please allow time for your payment to arrive by the deadline. Post marks on mailed remittances will not be considered as date of payment. Receipt of electronic payments will be recorded as of the date and time the funds are posted to the city’s bank account and not when the payment is transmitted by your financial institution.

Please remember to either complete the Home Owner Grant application that is attached to the bottom of the Tax Notice and remit it to City Hall, or complete the online application to claim the Grant. A 10% penalty will be applied to any Home Owner Grant amounts not claimed by the deadline of July 2, 2019 at 4:45 p.m.

Be Bear Smart

Bears are in search of food before going into hibernation. Some simple steps to follow to help avoid a run-in with bears are:

– Store garbage in a secure building or a bear proof container until pickup. DO NOT leave garbage accessible to animals.

– Pick all fruit off your trees daily and allow the fruit to ripen indoors. Do not allow fruit to accumulate on the ground.

– Take bird feeders inside and keep the ground clear of spilled birdseed.

– Keep pets and pet food indoors, if pets are fed outside please ensure the food is all cleaned up.

– Ensure that your BBQ is completely cleaned after use, making sure to clean the grease trap thoroughly.

Using common sense all year round helps limit human-bear conflict, but being extra cautious right now will aid in saving a bear’s life and help to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. Remember, a fed bear is a dead bear! For more information on living with wildlife please visit the city’s website at http://bit.ly/2EJ09FH. To report wildlife-human interaction where public safety is an immediate risk, please call the Conservation Officer Service RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.

Garbage Collection

Here are some friendly reminders regarding household garbage collection:

  • Place carts out for collection no earlier than 5 a.m. and no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day.
  • All regular household garbage can be placed inside the cart.
  • Waste must be bagged and tied. This will prevent garbage from becoming airborne as well as help keep your cart clean. Anything that is placed inside the cart must be able to fall freely when dumped.
  • Do not over-fill your cart; the lid must be able to close completely.
  • The maximum weight load for a cart is 59kgs (130 lbs.). Please keep in mind that excessive weight in your garbage cart could result in damage to the cart.
  • Ensure cart is placed on the ground, level at the road edge and not upon snow banks and that there is 1 metre of clearance around the entire cart with no overhead obstructions.

In order to prevent odours and avoid attracting bears and other wildlife, residents will still need to securely store their garbage collection carts until their neighbourhood collection day. Please ensure that you:

Wash your cart out regularly with a mild non-toxic detergent;

Place your garbage into garbage bags inside your cart;

Keep the lid closed at all times.
