Early morning ʔaq̓am fire brought under control
At approximately 1 a.m., July 24, a wildfire occurred within our community. It is believed the fire was likely caused by a lightning strike.
The fire is now under control, and a fire watch is currently in place to monitor the area and ensure there are no flare-ups.
A heartfelt thank you to Cheryl, Cody, Tim, Shay, Dusty, Neil, Justin, Julie, Lindsay, Jonathon, and Peter, who responded quickly to help contain the fire before it could spread. Your willingness to step up and protect our community is sincerely appreciated.
The incident has also been reported to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
BCWS has opened File #007786 and will be attending the site to conduct a post-fire assessment, including checking for hot spots and implementing any necessary mitigation measures to reduce the risk of re-ignition.
This serves as an important reminder that wildfire conditions can change rapidly.
We encourage all community members to remain prepared by:
- Having a Go Bag ready with medications, identification, Status Cards, Certificate of Possession (CP) documents, passports, insurance information, wills, other important documents, and essential supplies.
- Creating a family communication and evacuation plan.
- Keeping your vehicle fueled and ready should an evacuation become necessary.
- Ensuring you have supplies ready for children, Elders, pets, and anyone in your household who may require additional support.
- Staying informed through the ʔaq̓am Facebook page, RDEK Emergency Information, BC Wildfire Service, and the Voyent Alert! app.
