Writers Conference May 10 – 13

The spring St. Eugene Writers Conference is fast approaching. The conference runs from May 10 to 13.

Timothy Taylor, short listed for the Giller Prize and a CBC Canada Reads participant, leads a Fiction/non-fiction session. The playwriting section will be led by Hiro Kanagawa, winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Playwriting last year for his piece Indian Arm. Anna Marie Sewell, former Edmonton Poet Laureate leads the poetry and spoken word session. Nelson author Deryn Collier leads a special session for writers of memoir and historic prose, Writing Your Truth. How to weave a compelling story from your stacks of research.

The Plein Air Painting workshop is also being held May 11-13. It was originally intended for the weekend of April 20 but winter was holding on too dearly.

There are two Manuscript Evaluation sessions led by Mark Kusnir and Sioux Browning. Keith Liggett, a Fernie author, is leading a Finding Your Voice workshop for emerging writers and Danielle Gibson, also of Fernie, will lead the Youth Workshop for high school students in Grade 10, 11, and 12.

Besides the award-winning authors leading three and four-day writing workshops, the Conference added several events to the schedule that are open to the public for a small cost or free.

Craig Shemilt of Blue Island Printing will be holding a Self-Publishing Workshop from 10 to noon on Friday May 11. The workshop is free for attendees of the conference and members of the Federation of BC Writers. The cost is $25 to all others.

Also on Friday there will be a panel discussion at 3:30 on Publishing Options—When to self-publish and when to seek conventional publishing. The panel discussions are free to all.

The Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre has arranged a historic tour of the residential school at 3:30 Saturday May 12. The tour is free for attendees of the conference and members of the Federation of BC Writers. The cost is $20 for all others.
